Poggio di Sotto is one of the benchmarks of Montalcino, and the winery team continues the tradition with this 22,000-bottle release. Luca Gardini: „One of the milestones for this appellation. Val d’Orcia: a valley crossed by the River Orcia, vineyards between 200 and 450 metres above sea level, soils of great skeletons. Fine and elegant nose. Aromas of violet petals, blackberry jam. The mouthfeel is both strong and firm demonstrating excellent capabilities of aging.“

Falstaff Magazin: „Funkelndes, aufhellendes Granatrot. Fein gezeichnete, sehr klare Nase nach frischen Kirschen und Zwetschken, etwas Chinarinde im Hintergrund. Rollt saftig und salzig über die Zunge, feines, griffiges Tannin in vielen Schichten, viel Spannung, sehr langer Nachhall.“

Closes long, fresh, and expansive, deeper and less sweet than the estate’s 2018 Rosso di Montalcino also released this year. Utterly delicious and already accessible, this boasts noteworthy elegance and freshness for such a big ripe wine.“

James Suckling: „There’s a real Burgundian feel here to the sour cherries, five spice, citrus, nutmeg and fresh oregnano. The tannins have a beautiful, porcelain-like feel; the acidity cuts a wide and long shape. Delicate, floral and refined. All about grace and elegance. Drink from 2021..“

Das Weingut Poggio di Sotto gehört seit 1999 zur Gruppe der Colle Massari Weingüter. Hierzu zählen neben Colle Massari selbst auch die Weingüter Grattamacco, San Giorgio und eben Poggio di Sotto. Claudio Tipa hat sein Geld in der Industrie gemacht und sich 1999 entschlossen seine Karriere im Weinsektor zu erweitern. Seine Frau Maria und seine Schwester Iris unterstützen diese Entscheidung tatkräftig. Poggio di Sotto liegt süd-östlich von Montalcino. Kultstatus und etliche Auszeichnungen erhielten die Weine von Poggio di Sotto unter dem Vorbesitzer Piero Palmucci. Die kompletten 10 Hektar Rebfläche des 1989 gegründeten Gutes sind für Brunello bestimmt und deshalb mit Sangiovesetrauben bestockt. Der hohen Qualität ist ein bewusst niedriger Ertrag von nur 3 — 3,5 Tonnen geschuldet. Es werden maximal 40.000 Flaschen jährlich produziert. Dass Klima und Bodenbeschaffenheit im Weinberg optimal sind, versteht sich angesichts der herausragenden Qualität der Weine von selbst. Nach der Fermentation in Holz- und Edelstahltanks reifen die Weine in slawonischer Eiche, bevor sie in die Flasche kommen — zwei Jahre der Rosso, vier Jahre der Brunello und fünf Jahre der Brunello Riserva.
