Wine Advocate: „Here's another very interesting wine from Volpaia that has since been moved up to Grand Selezione status. The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala (with 9,000 bottles made) is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo. Initially, the wine puts forward an elegant and streamlined personality, but it quickly takes on volume with dark fruit layering and sweet spice. This vintage offers an especially focused or sharp personality that bodes well for its future bottle evolution.“
Decanter: „Originally planted at the end of the 1990s, Coltassala is Volpaia’s oldest vineyard. The 2.5ha plot reaches 535 metres on sandstone soil. It divulges its French barrique ageing with preliminary aromas of coffee, incense and roasted meat; then it makes way for Radda’s scented floral nuances. The oak falls into place properly on the palate. A creamy texture is juxtaposed by brisk, lifting acidity. Chalky rather than chewy tannins are assertive and sophisticated, and lilac and lavender accent the finish.“
James Suckling: „Wonderful perfumes and freshness with cut flowers, citrus and dark berries. Violets, too. Full-bodied and layered with gorgeous fruit and clarity. Hints of bark and stone. Some conifer, too. Racy and long. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.“
Vinous: „The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala is marked by a riper fruit profile than is common here, along with more overt sweetness and oak influence. There is plenty of depth, but less in the way of Sangiovese typicity. Chocolate, sweet spice and leather are front and center. This is an especially bombastic style that is more about intensity than finesse. Some readers may enjoy it more than I do.“
Wine Spectator: „Fresh and focused, delivering black cherry, blackberry and stone flavors, with a structure that borders on racy. This firms up nicely on the lingering finish, which bears tinges of iron and sanguine. Best from 2023 through 2035.“
